Abstract

Primary squamous cell carcinoma of the thyroid is very rare and its histogenesis is poorly defined so far. We report a case of a 65-year-old man who presented with a rapid growing mass of the thyroid. Physical, radiological, and cytological examination revealed clues when malignancy was suspected and total thyroidectomy and neck dissection were performed. Histopathologic examination of the thyroid revealed poorly-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma. Proper workup excluded the possibility of any primary site of squamous cell carcinoma other than the thyroid. The patients underwent total laryngectomy followed by external radiation therapy. At 6 months after surgery the patient remained disease free.
